There are a few characteristic styles in the murals in Wellington. I have mentioned the bizarre bestial characters  in bmd murals already. Another one is evident in the Tattoo apartments in Abel Smith and Wigan Streets (the building replacing the Mokomuseum – the National Tattoo Museum of New Zealand Aotearoa. )

The paintings are enormous – four floors on each end.  The characters are grotesque, with exaggerated features. The animals on the side of the building have human facial features growing out of them. The art is accomplished, but a little disturbing none the less.

You may recall that I featured another mural from this artist, on the wall of a building in Manners Street.
An excercise in internet-research discovered that the artists is ‘drypnz’ and the mural was entered in the Resene Total Colour Awards in 2011. Jon Drypnzwas born in the south of England, studied in Welllington and his since gone on to show his work in Australia, Berlin, London and Japan.
